The Peninsular part of the country has seen a drop in self-sufficiency to 91.62 percent in the supply of pig meat in 2020. In 2020 there were 470 farms in operation carrying a swine population of 1,468,438 heads. Many small farms are closing down due to viability and environmental factors but the bigger farms have expanded their production capacity.  The shortfall in supply is being met with imports of frozen pork cuts mostly from neighboring countries.

Pig meat is mostly consumed as fresh unprocessed pork.

The swine industry will continue to operate in an increasingly difficult farming environment due to urbanization and is still trying to persuade the government to support the development of Pig Farming Areas (PFAs) and in situ development of existing environment friendly farms as PFAs.
