An egg a day keeps the doctor away

Eggs said to keep blood pressure down 25 Feb 2009

According to research, enjoying an egg at breakfast time could help keep your blood pressure in check.

It has been reported on MailOnline that scientists from the University of Alberta in Canada have shown that eggs produce proteins that mimic the action of powerful blood pressure-lowering drugs.

It appears that eggs may be good for the heart, lowering blood pressure in the same way as prescription-only pills. The drugs lower blood pressure by stopping the hormone angiotensin narrowing the body’s blood vessels.

The researchers showed that when eggs come in contact with stomach enzymes they produce a protein that acts in the same way.

Eggs: dispel mythology, restore the reputation 12 Feb 2009

According to research conducted by a British researcher, concerns over egg consumption and higher cholesterol are unfounded.

The link between the consumption of eggs and elevated cholesterol levels (hypercholesterolemia), which ultimately could lead to cardiovascular disease, is based on out-dated information, according to Professor Bruce Griffin from the University of Surrey, UK.

“The egg is a nutrient-dense food, a valuable source of high quality protein and essential micronutrients that is not high in SFA or in energy. In the current difficult financial climate, eggs can play a useful role as a relatively inexpensive source of nutrition for all and especially for people on low incomes,” it was said in Nutrition Bulletin.

“It is high time that we dispelled the mythology surrounding eggs and heart disease and restored them to their rightful place on our menus where they can make a valuable contribution to healthy balanced diets.”
