Introduction

The poultry industry in Malaysia has developed to a successful and productive industry in the country; providing quality protein in terms of chicken meat and eggs to consumers in this country within affordable prices. Malaysia has a self-sufficiency of poultry meat at 103%, and the poultry sector has contributed to the 78% of the RM21 billion livestock industry in the country. The industry has good potential for growth in the export market.

While the poultry industry has progressed substantially over the years with many farmers showing high productivity there are still room for improvement in others. A large number of farms are still subjected to seasonal disease challenges affecting productivity. Over and above that there are some current issues of concerns especially public health concerns like antimicrobial resistance, environmental issues waste management and fly control, and animal welfare issues. At the same time, the introduction of intervention measures should not compromise the sustainability of the industry and its ability to continue providing quality and affordable products to consumers.

Many seminars and conferences have been organised and had elaborated on these issues. However more advocacy and behaviour change communication are required to reach the target audience; i.e. the poultry players in the supply chain from ‘farm to fork’.
