Malaysia Declared Free from Avian Flu (HPAI)

The Department of Veterinary Services (DVS), Malaysia initially reported an outbreak of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) on 28th February 2017 in Kg.Pulau Tebu, Tunjong, Kota Bharu, Kelantan. Surveillance by the DVS showed that the disease was restricted to a region in Kelantan only. After the final disinfection (1 April 2017), there have not been any newly detected outbreaks of HPAI in poultry in Kelantan state or in other states.

On 4th of July 2017, the Director General of the DVS declared Malaysia to be free of the HPAI effective from 1st July 2017.

This is in accordance to the condition laid out by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) whereby freedom from HPAI is recognized when there are no new occurances of the disease after 90 days from the last disinfection procedure.

The Director General of DVS, Dato’ Dr Quaza Nizamuddin bin Hassan Nizam sent a self-declaration to the OIE on 25 July 2017.

The self-declaration can be obtained from the OIE website at
